Two men dead, one injured in accident on dangerous Hwy 63

Source : Edmonton Sun

FORT MCMURRAY -- RCMP say two men are dead and a man is seriously injured following another fatal accident on Hwy 63 near Fort McMurray.

Police say the motorists were killed after two pickup trucks collided yesterday morning just north of the turnoff to the Suncor oilsands plant.

TWIN THE LINKPolitical and labour leaders have been lobbying the Alberta government for years to twin the major link between Edmonton and the oilsands capital.

Between 2001 and 2005, there were 1,011 collisions on the highway, killing 25 people and injuring 257 others.

The province has committed $820 million to twinning the road, but has been widely criticized for not expediting the work. RCMP say that 10 people died in accidents on Hwy 63 last year.

It's a shame that these accidents happen..and 95% of them need to be blamed on idiot road warriors..these drivers NEED to slow down. 4x4 trucks might take off well in slippery conditions but they behave the same as passenger cars when the brakes come on. I live in centennial campground and witness many vehicles driving 120 plus in this 70 zone headed out of tow so it's not hard to imaging how you folks are driving on the highway out of the city limits.

These young men come from far away and communities that was difficult to make a decent wage in. They hit the big time here and figure they got the world by the _ _ _..and some will never see home again because they can't contain their good fortune and respect it or the other lives they endanger on the road with their swollen heads. This makes me wonder about all the safety they learn on site and if they would still even have their job had the employer knew. As with many other jobs and driver abstracts being preffered by employers here I feel that any employee who loses more than 3 points off a license in one year should be terminated.

Those numbers are surely disturbing. I hope preventive measures had been put in place already so as to prevent accidents such as these.
